Dr. Albert Troy Linn, MD |
Personal Statement - Submitted as part of his application for residency to the University of Florida Medical School & associated hospitals
I am a doctor. No, I am not yet an MD, and I do not have a license to practice medicine, but I am a doctor nevertheless. I am a doctor the way John F. Kennedy was a Berliner; from the day I decided to study medicine, I was a doctor in my heart. I did not always know I wanted to be a doctor, but I am certain of it now; and all the events that have accompanied me down this path have changed me forever.
Before I was a doctor, I was an electrical engineer; that is, until my son, Teddy, helped guide me into medicine. His birth represented my first significant exposure to health care professionals; he was born prematurely, and my wife and I practically lived in the NICU for three weeks. I was frightened of everything that could go wrong; however, I was excited to be a father, and amazed by this brand new human being. The people and technology used to support that life also made a deep impression on me. That experience led me to a new calling, and I have been a doctor ever since.
As my first year of medical school ended, my wife was nineteen-weeks pregnant. She was on bed rest due to complications, so I spent the summer caring for her and Teddy. Sammy was born just as the new school year was approaching; he was also premature, and, like his big brother, spent three weeks in the NICU.
Shortly thereafter, a mass in my neck was diagnosed as medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. So, during the fall semester of my second year, I had two operations, and a six-week course of radiation therapy. In spite of all this adversity, I decided to continue in school (I was, after all, a doctor). I emerged with a stronger commitment to my family and a greater appreciation for what is important.
I am a thinking man, and have always been a generalist by nature, and internal medicine has seduced me with its great diversity and intellectualism. Sure, other specialties have touched my life profoundly, and other specialties figured prominently in my decision to become a doctor. Even so, I know what I like, and I like general internal medicine.
I feel I can gain as much from my patients' experiences as they can gain from mine, so I hope to use the tools I have been given to treat and educate a wide variety of patients. I want to help the people in my community to lead healthy lives, and I shall continue to value and pursue educational and clinical excellence throughout my career.
My favorite thing to do when I am not playing doctor is to spend time with my family, so I try to include them in all my hobbies. I am quite a handyman around the house; also I like to cook, play guitar, swim, bicycle and channel-surf.
Medicine is my second career, but my first calling. I bring to my new calling an appetite for knowledge; I bring the experience of having been a patient, which has given me invaluable insight into patient care; and I bring a commitment that has been tested by adversity. Finally, I bring enthusiasm; the excitement I felt when I first decided to study medicine has grown as fast as my sons have grown. It is this excitement that assures me that I am, and always will be, a doctor. |
